During his career, Samuel Stuetz has had the opportunity to lead many teams to the completion of multiple projects. Among them was a team of 35 that was tasked with creating better ways of packaging for automotive warehouses. Through this assignment, Samuel Stuetz learned a great deal about what is needed to lead a team well. Regardless of your role in life, you will be placed on a team at some point. Whether it is a football team, group project, or committee at work, it is important to know how to lead the team well. The following are some tips that Samuel Stuetz would give anyone interested in building and running a team well. - Recruit the Right People: Frequently, teams struggle because too many people have the same set of talents and interests. It is all well and good to bring your friends on the team, but at the end of the day, your success will be determined by the talents of the people on the team, not how good of friends you are. Because of this, Samuel Stuetz encourages team leaders to recruit people with the ability to complete projects. Having people of various talents who are go-getters and can follow through is incredibly helpful when deadlines are approaching.
- Focus on Communication: It is vital that a leader listens to the people on their team. You recruited your team members because of their individual talents and specialties, so you should listen to what they have to say – especially when it pertains to their individual areas of expertise. Frequently, team leaders let the authority go to their heads and start thinking that they know more than their team. Great leaders know when to listen and take advice from their specialists.
- Be Transparent: Your team won't win if they don't know what their objectives are. Samuel Stuetz encourages team leaders to make sure that the goals are clear to the team before work starts, so that they can break the process down into individual steps. By being transparent with the team about challenges and goals, you help them react to difficulty better and accomplish more.
Samuel Stuetz has led teams in many industries and believes that these maxims are true across the board. If team leaders will follow this advice, Samuel Stuetz knows that teams will be more efficient, have happier members, and will be more likely to accomplish what they set out to do.
