The Computer Technology Industry Association or compTIA is an information technology group that provides professional certifications as part of its program. These certifications can form the basis of a lucrative career in the technology field. The CompTIA is headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois. CompTIA certification is offered in more than one area. These exams are not geared toward any one manufacturer. Here is a list of the most popular exams currently available. A+ Certification This is the most basic certification in the technology field. Previous certifications were for a lifetime, but current test takers will have to renew their certification every three years. This certification consists of two tests. One test covers A+ Plus essentials and focuses on the fundamentals of security, computer architecture and networking. The second tests is a hand-on test where the candidate performs diagnosis and troubleshooting. Network+ This test covers basic networking skills of network hardware, software, connections, the OSI Reference model and protocols for wide area networks and local area networks. This test can be used as a basis for taking Microsoft or Cisco certifications in the future. CompTIA recommends working in the field for at least nine months before taking this test. Security+ The CompTIA security test covers the areas of computer security including compliance, operational threats and vulnerability, application, data and host security issues, access control and identification management. It is suggested that those sitting for this test have about two years of work experience although this is not a requirement. The test is a 100 question multiple test exam. CTT+ The Certified Technical Trainer Plus or CTT+ exam certifies the test taker to be a technical trainer. This exam is given in two parts. One part is taken on the computer, the other is a video based exam. The test covers core instructor techniques including presentation, facilitation, and communication in a classroom environment. The exam also covers classroom preparation and evaluation techniques. CDIA+ This test, the Certified Document Imaging Architect or CDIA exam shows that the candidate has developed the skills necessary for proper scanning, storage and retrieval of technical documents. This is the only test in the area currently in the information technology industry. Linux+ This test certifies that the passing candidate has a working basic knowledge of Linux. It does not address desktop platform use of Linux but focusing on the language as a server and network operating system. The test consists of 98 multiple choice questions. Some questions have more than one correct answer. Areas to review include installation, management, security and hardware. PDI+ The PDI Plus exam or Printing and Documentation Imaging Certification are considered by many companies that manufacture printers a basic requirement for hiring repair and service technicians. The test covers the areas of print engine and components, scanners, networking, color theory, customer service, repair tools and electromechanical components. Before sitting for this exam, it is recommended that the test taker have some experience with printers, scanners and other imaging devices. Project+ This certification deals with the ability of the candidate to complete projects at the corporate level. The test covers all the skills necessary to manage and complete a group project. Skills like management, planning, initiation, execution, acceptance, and closure are covered on this test. The test consists of 100 questions taken on a computer.
