Summer is a great time to go rafting in the Grand Canyon. They are wildly popular as you might imagine, so get your seats early or you might miss out. Google Let's take a look at the one-day float trips that depart from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. If you want to find this location on Google Maps, just search for Tusayan, AZ. Anyhow, South Rim rafting tours come in two versions. The first requires taking a bus to Page, AZ, before transferring to your boat at the base of Glen Canyon Dam. The deluxe version, or the second option, flies you to Page and adds in a Jeep tour of Antelope Canyon. The rafting segment is 15.3 miles and goes downstream to historic Lee's Ferry. Once you get there, you hop on a bus and head back to the Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan. No Rough Water The water on this stretch of the river is always calm, so kids ages four and older are allowed. All ages enjoy this fun tour, even seniors. As for white water, you'll have to find a provider of multi-day rafting trips (costs can range from $1,500 and up per person!). There's also a really good 1-day rafting tour from Las Vegas, NV. With this tour, you take a helicopter to the West Rim and descend to the canyon floor. From there, you'll ascend, transfer to a bus and go to the base of iconic Hoover Dam. This rafting tour covers eleven miles of the Colorado River. You get to see scenic Black Canyon as you wend your way to Willow Beach. Whichever rafting tour you take, be sure to watch for all the wildlife hiding along the banks of the Colorado River and in the clefts of the rock walls. When to Go If you want to take a one-day raft trip, you'll have to do it between April and November. The water is too cold during the other months of the year. The waters are also swift during the winter and spring since the melting snow from the Rockies flows through the canyon on its way to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. Don't forget these tours are very popular. Because of that, you need to book your seats at least a week in advance. You might be able to get away with 72 hours but that's pushing it. Forget trying to book within 24 hours, especially if you are staying in Flagstaff or Williams (if you do, factor in a 60-mile drive and a 6 a.m. tour check in). The most convenient way to book these trips is over the Internet. Don't buy them from the big travel sites though. Instead, go direct to the actual tour supplier. Since they run the tours, they can offer the lowest prices. You will be able to use the lowest Internet rate when you complete your purchase online. To Summarize Grand Canyon rafting tours are a lot of fun for everyone in your group or family. You can depart from Vegas or Tusayan at the South Rim. All the tours start early in the morning because they last all day, there is no such thing as a raft tour that will have you back in a half day. Book your tour online to get the low internet rate and be sure to book early. --------------------- The Author's Tips Travel writer J. Moriarity is an expert on Grand Canyon float tours.
