A report has found that the majority of car collisions are caused by human error. A recent report by Mayo Road Safety found that 80% of road accidents are caused by human error. Whilst every day drivers are the most at risk, it was highlighted that inexperienced and reckless drivers cause the majority of collisions. Tailgating was found to be the greatest offence among the Irish population. Some drivers become extremely impatient and tailgate in an attempt to encourage other drivers to increase speed or pull over to the left (a slower lane). However others tailgate without thinking and get just a bit to close - this is particularly evident in the city centre during rush hour traffic. Speed was highlighted as the single biggest killer with over 40% of fatal collisions caused by excessive or inappropriate speed. However most traffic accidents are the product of several factors such as: tailgating at excessive speed, undertaking at excessive speed, failing to indicate or failure to follow road signs. As such there is a number of activities that the Mayo Road Safety would suggest. 1) Driving education and training in schools by certified road traffic instructors and school teachers, this would give adolescents an understanding of driving from a young age and encourage good driving attitudes. 2) Refresher courses for adults (not a re- test) but a compulsory lesson each year to reduce the development of bad habits and ensure drivers are kept up to date with changing road safety legislation. 3) The enforcement of traffic laws that are designed to prevent accidents, with particular focus at times / locations where accidents occur most frequently. 4) Frequent testing of car designs to ensure that the main components are driver friendly i.e. minimum blind spots to allow drivers ease of vision, the introduction of seatbelts on public transport etc. 5) The continuation of road safety authority campaigns that make the public aware of the rules of the road but also the potential results of their actions. For example: In a 60 km/h zone, travelling at: • 65 km/h, you are twice as likely to have a serious crash. • 70 km/h, you are 4 times as likely to have a serious crash. • 75 km/h, you are 10 times as likely to have a serious crash. • 80 km/h, you are 32 times as likely to have a serious crash. However it is not just your life that is at riska 5 km/h difference in your speed could be the difference between life and death for a vulnerable road such as a pedestrian.” • Hit by a car travelling at 60 km/h, 9 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed • Hit by a car travelling at 50 km/h, 5 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed • Hit by a car travelling at 30 km/h, 1 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed That is without considering the injuries that one could sustain oneself or cause to another road user. Each year on Irish roads there are thousands of collisions and thousands of injured individuals as a result. In 2012 alone there wasan excess of 5,000 collisions in any given week. Therefore as a road user (driver, passanger, cyclist or pedestrian) is is likely that at some point in your life you will be involved in a road accident. If you find yourself in a collision due to no fault of your own be sure to take note of the events leading up to the incident and the precautions you had taken to avoid such an incident. Then it is best to seek the advice of a road traffic accident solicitor. Your legal representative can advise you of the documentation and necessary steps that must be taken to create a strong case and successful claim.
