A leading supplier of technical textiles to the automotive sectorhas developed a novel knitted exhaust sleeve which offers thermalmanagement benefits. Federal Mogul Corporation"s newThermflex sleeve which is made from basalt yarns which canwithstand temperatures up to 750°C is believed to be a threelayer structure which can be widened or narrowed at will to fitvarious geometries. According to Federal the optimized design can now be tailored tofit any combination of exhaust pipe and tube geometries, helping toincrease efficiency of a vehicle's exhaust system, while protectingsensitive nearby vehicle components. Additionally, the uniqueflexible manufacturing process is said to produce an exhaust sleevethat is application-specific, eliminating the need for customtooling. Federal-Mogul's Thermflex insulating sleeve traps heat within theexhaust system, allowing for greater efficiency of the emissionscontrol systems.
The Thermflex product line is constructed withbasalt yarns, designed to withstand temperatures up to 750°C,which reduces the radiation of heat to nearby components, many ofwhich are sensitive to high temperatures. Innovative design The innovative Thermflex design is said to allow for the sleevediameter to expand up to 1.5 times and can accommodate flanges andbends, common on exhaust system components. The construction canalso include vents to strategically direct heat away from adjacentcomponents. "Thermflex insulating sleeves are a highly-engineeredsolution, designed to help vehicle manufacturers meet stringent andevolving emissions regulations," said Janice Maiden, vicepresident and business director, Federal-Mogul Systems Protection.
"This fully-integrated product takes into accountenvironmental, thermal and durability considerations and addressesall of these issues with one customized design. Further, Thermflexis lightweight compared to traditional solutions for exhaustinsulation, thereby providing additional customer value." Prorietary computerized knitting technology Federal-Mogul says it uses proprietary computerized knittingtechnology that allows for rapid prototyping of Thermflex sleeves,improving speed to production and eliminating tooling costs. Oncethe prototype design has been validated, it can be instantlytransferred into production at a Federal-Mogul's Systems Protectionmanufacturing facility. The company does not disclose which typeof machine the sleeve is produced on. Federal-Mogul believes its Thermflex sleeves are the only exhaustinsulators in the marketplace to offer customized design optionsthat accommodate packaging constraints.
