The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a non profit organisation in India that provides midday meals to children enrolled in government schools.
Akshaya Patra's mid day meal programme provides mid day meals to 1.3 million children, covering over 9,000 schools in nine states in India every day. The organisation operates numerous kitchens under strict code of hygiene and efficiency to prepare fresh nutritious meals to the underprivileged children.
The children's non profit organisation is also involved in other humanitarian activities such as awareness and talent development programmes, teacher workshops, employment of women self-help groups, training programmes on sanitation and so on. It is through sheer hard work and commitment to the cause by non profit organisations that schemes like the mid day meal can be executed with greater efficiency and quantity, quality and accountability can be ensured. The potential of a mid day meal can be undervalued sometimes. A Mid Day Meal is more about free food that acts as an incentive for children to attend school; it's a promise of a future. A child who has turned to labour only dreams of getting his next meal. Hunger acts as an obstacle, holding them back from realizing their dreams. Non profit organisations for children aim to empower them with education. A direct relation can be made between food and education. Free meals in schools act as an incentive for children to enrol, attend and complete school to receive a wholesome, tasty meal every day. Education has the potential to eliminate illiteracy and poverty, and the mid day meal programme aims to counter both these issues.

It is the continuous effort of this organisation to reach out to as many children as possible. The mission is to strive forward to feed 5 million children by 2020. To help more underprivileged children, donations are required to bear the running cost.
A donation of just Rs 750 can feed a child for an entire year. Every donation matters as it makes a difference in changing a child's future.
