I believe at some point every person thinks about writing a book. Whether it's a book about their life, someone else's life or complete fiction on any topic, the thought occurs to everyone. My advice to someone considering it is to start small with a blog and grow into becoming a full-fledged author. However, be advised that even maintaining a blog is quite an undertaking if you hope to develop a following. So, if you think it's a good idea and want to start "blogging," getting started is simple and very inexpensive. On the web there are many blog sites that collectively host thousands of blogs. Sites like WordPress.com and Blogger.com are free sites where you can establish your "corner of the Internet." Once you've established your location, it's time to begin planning your presence. So where to begin? First, decide on the subject matter of your blog. Successful blogs are usually representative of the blogger's passions. Selecting a subject in which you have a significant interest, and even better, extensive knowledge, is key to the effectiveness of the message and ease of producing engaging content over time. Continually creating original content is Job #1 for a blogger. To create a successful blog, it must kindle the reader's interest and keep them coming back for more. You must garner their curiosity, too. Not only to keep the reader coming back to read, but to engage and participate in the conversation. When your blog is getting comments and your readers are interacting you will know you're making an impact. Although now you've reached a level of engagement, you're still not finished. You need to learn more. Your readers are viewing you as an expert and your blog is becoming a resource to them. As is characteristic of any growth, you will realize that the more you know, the clearer you can see how much you don't know, and that's good. As your readership grows and your knowledge expands you will likely encounter challenges to your positions that you express through your blog. The challenges don't have to be negative or threatening, they may simply be challenges to the limits of your knowledge. Again, this is good. If your readers are viewing you as an expert, they believe you are credible. They have chosen you to help them expand their knowledge, so you are helping them grow. Do not abandon those who have grown to respect your leadership, or at least they respect your perspective on the topic at hand. In addition to maintaining the flow of information for the visitors, readers, and followers that you've developed, you will still need to assume an active program of self promotion in hopes of driving new traffic to your blog. New readers and followers are the lifeblood of a successful, ongoing blog. So blogging, even though it may be a venture that's simple to begin, it's not a task to be treated lightly. Unless, of course, you're only seeking to use your blog as an electronic notebook to serve as a repository for your thoughts. mastersthesiswriting rewiew
