Colombia's largest rebel force has askedthe newly-released French reporter Romeo Langlois to carry amessage calling on France to help promote peace talks between theleftist guerrilla group and the Colombian government, local mediareported on Thursday. At a press conference held Thursday at the French embassy inBogota, Langlois said the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces ofColombia (FARC) has entrusted him with a letter for FrenchPresident Francois Hollande, calling on countries to "come and helpColombia negotiate" peace. Langlois, 35, was released Wednesday after more than a month incaptivity after he fell into rebel hands while covering a ColombianArmy anti-narcotics operation. Asked about the contents of the letter, Langlois said he was notauthorized by his captors to read it, though he was familiar withsome of its contents. "The FARC and many people think that you have to call on peoplefrom other countries to help the Colombians arrive ... at anegotiated solution" to the armed conflict in the south Americancountry, said Langlois. "In this case, obviously, (the rebels) call on France" to promotetalks between the group and the government that could lead topeace, Langlois added. The correspondent for French news channelFrance 24 and Le Figaro has been working in Colombia for more than10 years. "My feeling is that the guerrillas want many countries, above allEuropean ones, to contribute" to dialog in Colombia, said Langlois. The last time the guerrillas sought international mediation tobroker a peace deal or prisoner exchange was in 2007, whenVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez served as a mediator between thetwo sides. Langlois arrived in Bogota late Wednesday after being released to aRed Cross-led humanitarian delegation in southern Caqueta province,where he had been captured. He was expected to fly to France laterThursday to reunite with his family. It is not known whether Hollande or any other government officialwill meet with Langlois. However, one of Hollande's first duties aspresident was to appoint a Foreign Ministry official to form partof the humanitarian delegation charged with receiving Langlois, asthe FARC had requested.
