There are different types of security systems switches are used for providing protection to the home. One of the most basic Home Security Las Vegas devices is the magnetic reed switch. Switches intended to protect opening doors or windows are normally of the closed magnetic variety. Basic versions are encased in plastic and consist of a metallic arm which closes the contacts when a magnet is held in close proximity to the switch face. For heavier duty, metal cased switches are also available for use in harsh atmospheres or where the switches may be subject to abuse, such as in an exposed position. When the magnet is moved away from the switch, such as when the door or window is opened, the moving contact, being no longer attracted, leaves the closed position, producing an open circuit in the switch mechanism or alarm contacts. It is this open circuit that is recognized by the control panel which then triggers the signaling devices to produce the required alarm. An inert gas surrounding the mechanism keeps the switch contacts in good condition and resists corrosion. The magnetic type sensor or reed switch is inexpensive, reliable and has a rated life of 10 million operations, which is far in excess of the operating life of more 'hi-tech' items used in home security. The magnetic reed switch normally features a terminal block of five terminals unless a fully sealed version is required. In the latter case the cables are pre-wired within the unit which is then welded together as an assembly to make it tamper proof. Magnetic switches are either surface mounted or flush mounted. The choice depends on the opening that is to be protected. Windows generally use surface mounted types whereas flush mounted units are preferable for doors and particularly for wooden doors. In the case of flush units, the switch is mounted within the door frame and the operating magnet set into the door. Flush unit switches and reed switches All reed switches have a specified opening gap, i.e. distance between the switch and operating magnet. This should be checked before installation using generally available test equipment - an ordinary multitester will suffice - and then verified after installation when the system has been fully commissioned. Flush unit switches when used on internal and external doors are fully hidden, making for a neat installation which also has a high security effect. Areas of the premises requiring protection are isolated by the system, since doors cannot be opened with the alarm system switched on. If the wiring to the devices can be effectively concealed an extremely tidy installation can be achieved. These Home Security Las Vegas systems should be installed by a professional.
