It makes use of mechanical joints (elastic coupling, drive, or other types) when you need to transmit the engine power between the trees, without changing speed and capacity. According to the needs of transmission is appropriate to assess the specific type of joint to use. Elastic coupling distinguished between: hydraulic coupling articulated joint, the axis-parallel or angled seats even at great distances flexible coupling or semi-elastic, allowing the trees to make small joint rotations, angles and beddings claw coupling, in the case of slight deviation between the two axes viscous coupling safety coupling, useful to block the movement in case of a system malfunction, usuallly when power exceed a normal level. Among these, the most common and used in various mechanical applications are, thanks to their versatility, the elastic coupling and the drive. The first is formed by two flanges, each coupled to one of the ends of the shafts, and joined together by springs or gummy elements capable of deforming and twisting, cushioning deviations. On the contrary the flanges of the rigid coupling are interposed by screws or bolts, not flexible nor adaptable. An elastic coupling is a mechanical device that allows the joining of two parts of shaft so that they can transmit the twisting motion. In fact it's quite rare that the two ends are perfectly aligned (irregularities positioning) or that they transfer the force in a regular manner (irregularities of operation), causing tears, bumps and twists. In particular the elastic coupling includes a flexible component, suitable to absorb torsion and vibration, preventing breakage of the mechanical parts. The flexible portion must be periodically revisioned and replaced, in case of loss of its flexibility. This step have to completed to allow the percfect operation of the system.
