Tooting your own horn every once in a while isn’t a bad thing. In fact, a bit of well-timed professional self-promotion can have positive effects on your career. An overdeveloped sense of humility can be harmful to your professional life. At times you must be willing and able to show people how solid your performance is. Don’t be afraid to take credit for your achievements and accomplishments! You can seize a moment of victory on the job, and you don't have to keep it a secret. Acknowledging an achievement isn't bragging, it’s a reason to celebrate! Bosses stay on the lookout for things that have the potential to go wrong. Give them the chance to recognize the things that are going right, and track your achievements where it counts. If you've done something that's beneficial for the business, help the boss see it. Jar them out of the routine of observing the negative. Your work is highlighted, and the manager gets to see that something is going right. It's a win/win situation. There’s an official time and place for tooting your own horn . . . don't blow the opportunity! Most companies do annual employee evaluations, so it doesn't hurt to keep a file of your accomplishments. This way you have some bullet points ready, especially when self-promotion counts toward career advancement. There's nothing wrong with taking credit for what you've done. Did you set a night's record in tips? A monthly record in sales? You did the hard work. Celebrate a little, share your joy, and you might inspire others with your achievement. Maybe they'll want to do even better! Competition is healthy, and enthusiasm is contagious. Include others if the situation warrants it. Accomplishing something as a team feels spectacular. Take the lead, seize the moment, and applaud the victory for your colleagues and yourself even if no one else does. Positivity is infectious and recognition of great teamwork builds morale. If you've got a success on your hands, there's nothing wrong with leading your own parade for a small stretch. Share your enthusiasm about a job well done—even if it is you that has done the job. Don’t miss opportunities to celebrate personal and professional victories of any size. Consider what P.T. Barnum, a man famous for his promotional skills and business savvy, once said: “Without promotion, something terrible happens . . . nothing!”
