The National Park Authority protects almost 12% of the areas country, including the wetlands and privately owned reserves. While the National Park Authority is enforcing most areas of natural beauty the area is still under threat from over fishing, illegal hunting and logging. This aside the area is rapidly improving its standards of monitoring these issues and it will definitely not ruin your travel plans. Parks can be accessed without a permit and there is accommodation within the parks for overnight stays. Costa Rica provides some of the best adventures for white water rafting as the water rushes down the mountainside. These sometimes technical and wild rivers can have participants clawing to the side of the raft and plunging through spectacular rain forest that are largely unexplored. Still in the mood to get wet, then Costa Rica offers some excellent scuba diving trips around the Manuel and Isla Cano areas, there is a range of shops offering scuba diving lessons and trips on a daily basis. For hiking and walking adventures then travel to the Arenal Volcano in the La Fortuna area, it is a must see. The once sleepy agricultural town of La Fortuna is now a tourist hotspot, all thanks to an eruption on July 29, 1968 creating what today is known as ‘Volcano Arenal’. The area of El Silencio Reserve and La Fortuna are both great overseas adventure travel destinations and you will be amazed by the friendly greeting you be given once here.
