Deformed steel, commonly known as “Rebar” which is short for reinforcement bars, is produced comprehensively by innumerable businesses in UAE. The price of construction materials, especially deformed steel has increased a great deal over the years. The price of steel mesh was found to increase by 19% and deformed steel up to 17%. Therefore, the government of Abu Dhabi has come up with a building materials price index for reference of all the fields that have fabricated deformed steel in UAE. Apart from deformed steel this index tracks over 22 construction materials that are considered basic for the foundation of buildings. A important steel production enterprises in UAE has decided to invest about 165 million dollars for expansion of capacity of buildings. They are now considered the second largest deformed steel manufacturers in UAE. The plant capacity is expected to reach an increase of 50 % in its capacity. The plant capacity is currently 500,000 of deformed steel bars and the company aims to increase it to about 750,000 meters. This proved to be a great reformation after a huge crash in the market of reformed steel a few years back. The company is also planning to build an integrated steel mill which has a commissioned preliminary planning unit for looking into the details of this project of expansion. Most of the company’s products are supplied in the domestic market and about 15% is exported. Apart from the normal deformed steel used for buildings and plants, a separate class of rebar is to be used for projects which are a subject to high risk such as nuclear power plants. The nuclear grade steel is the highest quality subdivision of steel required for nuclear power plant construction. Deformed steel in UAE plays a key role in the safety and security of nuclear projects. It is one of various physical safety and security design attributes that make nuclear energy plants one amongst the strongest and most robust creations in the world. UAE has also made work very comfortable for cutters and benders by keeping the import duty of deformed steel unchanged for years. Expectations increased among cutters and benders when rumours were spread about import duty being slashed as 75% of the buyers of deformed steel are cutters and benders. But the import duty will not be cancelled and will be maintained strictly at 5% to avoid illegal activities. Certain steel fabrication business in UAE were awarded a contract for enhancing their deformed steel designing capabilities at their plant.
