Exports of roasted ducks by Weifang Legang Food Co "has notrecovered", even though the European food watchdog withdrew thealert on the products for alleged heavy metal contamination, theChinese company told the Global Times yesterday. The European Commission Health and Consumer ProtectionDirectorate-General announced on May 14 a notification withdrawalon Legang's ducks, which were previously accused of exceeding thepermitted maximum heavy metal level. On April 25, two sample test results from a German laboratoryproved that Legang's ducks have not contained excessive heavymetals. "Indeed, the EU has canceled the export ban on us. But our poultrymeat exports have not yet recovered, and our sales remainsluggish," Yu Mingfu, overseas sales director at the Weifang,Shandong Province-based company, told the Global Times yesterday. The EU food watchdog issued an alert on April 2, claiming thatroasted ducks produced by Legang Food were found to containexcessive mercury, a heavy metal element that can cause chronic oracute poisoning when exposed. Thus, the EU food authority required both "border control" and"consignment detained", if the duck products from the company triedto enter the European Union countries. "Such a warning badly hurt our exports. Right now, it's difficultto calculate our losses in the past months," Yu said. According to China's General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine Thursday, Weifang Legang Food Co has beenthe country's biggest exporter of poultry meat products to EU sinceAugust 1, 2008, when the European Commission decided to ease thepoultry import ban from China. Legang has exported 20,155 tons of ducks since August 2008, withthe total value of $144.88 million, accounting for 54 percent ofthe country's total poultry meat exports to the EU. The Weifang government announced Tuesday that given the mercuryaccusation, the local authorities anticipated that the EU wouldpossibly impose stricter import standards on Chinese poultry meatimports in future. So Weifang's food authorities in April checkedraw materials, water, production process and food samples atLegang. No heavy metal contents were found to exceed the permittedmaximum levels. It is not the first time that the EU food watchdog wrongly allegedChinese products of containing unauthorized substances. In March,2010, the commission withdrew a mistaken warning that claimedLegang ducks were tested to contain parasiticide moxidectin.
