Results are in from the April 16-30 segment of The American Punditcontest, and for the first time, both winners were chosen from theWriting Assignment submissions. Contest rules stipulate that at least one of the two winningreports for a given two-week segment must be on the assigned topic, with the other winner coming from either general submissions orother on-topic submissions. We received many quality entries inboth categories, but after careful consideration, we"vedeemed writers from Virginia and Kentucky the winners. Both wroteabout the broken state of the American political system, and bothoffered constructive criticism on how to fix what ails us. In an April 22 entry headlined " Who broke our political system and our government? " Wordsmith76 , a stringer who just joined the site on March 11, 2012, remindedreaders that our American freedom and way of life has been paid forwith the blood of brave soldiers dying alone in foreign lands sothat we might continue to build the best United States possible. And yet, according to Wordsmith76, "We are responsible forthe sad and pathetic state of our political process and ourgovernment. We lost our passion for liberty and equality while weallowed ourselves to be distracted by the pursuit of accumulatedwealth, material goods and reality television." Our other winner, Allvoices stringer Pleas Lucian Kavanaugh of Lexington, Ky., takes aim at the notion of "corporatepersonhood" in " The separation of Inc. and State," his first article for Allvoices despite joining the site on Jan.16, 2011. He writes: "…campaign contributionrestrictions of legal persons are now equated with free speechrestrictions of actual persons, effectively allowing corporationsto make unlimited campaign contributions to electoral candidatesciting the right to free speech in defense." We hope to be hearing a lot more from these writers, both of whomare now eligible for the $5,000 Grand Prize, to be awarded afterthe November elections, and will earn $250 for their winningefforts. In addition, they will both be promoted to Anchors, eligible to submit stories to Allvoices" Select Media program. Moving forward, the current Writing Assignment expands on the themeof a broken system, at least for those who think the two-partysystem could benefit from a viable "third party." Thecurrent assignment: What will it take for a "third party" to level theplaying field with Democrats and Republicans? The author(s) of the best response(s) published May 1-15 will beawarded $250 each and will be eligible for the $5,000 grand prize. At least one winner on this topic will be chosen from articlessubmitted during the first half of May .
