Intel has big plans. An anonymous source claims that more than adozen Intel-based Windows 8 devices will be released in November:some tablets, some laptops, and some 'hybrids.' After that, thechipmaker plans to court Apple. Though Microsoft likes to release 10,000 word posts on its Building Windows 8 blog , it still manages to say very little. We have many questions aboutWindows 8. All indications are that it's coming this year,but Microsoft has set no timetable.
Luckily, CNET may have found the answer. The tech site claims that "asource familiar with the device makers' plans" told itthat the first batch of Intel-based Windows 8 tablets will hitstore shelves in November. According to the source, there will be "more than adozen" tablets and laptops, but more than half of them willbe ‘hybrid' designs, or tablets with laptop-likefeatures, or laptops with tablet-like features. (Read: How tablets and smartphones are shaping your next PC .) All of them will also run on Intel's new "CloverTrail" Atom processor — it's first dual-coremobile chip. Of course, we are only speaking of one component of the Windows 8launch.
These dozen tablets, hybrids, and laptops due in Novemberwill be backward compatible with older versions of Windows and runlegacy applications and games (those compatible with Vista andWindows 7). Tablets and devices running Windows RT (the dumb nameMicrosoft has given to Windows 8 on ARM processors, Intel'schief competitor), may come out earlier or later, and there couldbe more than a dozen of those as well. At least, that's whatwe guess based on CNET's wording. Intel targets Apple and mobile Intel isn't happy only being the Windows 8 chipset vendor.It's still actively trying to break into the smartphone spaceas well — an area absolutely dominated (nearly 100 percent)by ARM processors, which have traditionally achieved much betterbattery life and required less cooling than Intel chips.
At CTIAWireless last week, we saw Intel's first stab at Android 4.0 , and it ran pretty well. And at Intel's annual investor day, Forbes reports that Intel spilled its plans for courting all mobiledevice makers, including Apple. Our job is to ensure our silicon is so compelling, in terms offrunning the Mac better or being a better iPad device, that as theymake those decisions they can t ignore us, said Intel CEO PaulOtellini. We wish him the best of luck, though it seems unlikely Apple willsimply abandon ARM, since it already invests heavily in designingand modifying its own ARM chips. Though Intel tightly controls allmanufacturing and design of its processors, ARM allows devicemakers to modify its specs and market their own custom processors.It's kind of the Android of computer processors.
