Different food contain different nutrients in them .We can identify the major nutrient present in food by performing certain tests .In this class we will perform tests only to detect the presence of carbohydrates , fats . and proteins( the tests for vitamin and minerals will be describes in higher classes ).by performing these tests we can find out whether a given food item contains carbohydrates ,fat or protein as the major nutrient. |
1. TEST FOR CARBOHYDRATES IN FOOD The most common carbohydrate in our food is starch. So, we will give taste to detect the presence of starch carbohydrate in a given food item. The test for the presence of starch in food item can be performed as follows:- Take a small quantity of the food to be tested. Add 2 or 3 drops of dilute iodine solution to the food with a dropper. If a blue – black color is produced, then starch is present in the given food.
2. TEST FOR THE PRESENCE OF FAT IN FOOD We can test the presence of fat in given food as follows: Rub a small quantity of the given food in the center of a brown paper. Hold this paper in front of a source of light and look through it. If the food is left a bright greasy patch (or translucent patch ) on paper, then fat is present in the food . 3. TEST FOR THE PRESENCE OF PROTEINS IN FOOD The Presence of proteins in a given food–stuff can be tested as follows: Take 2 ml of given food – stuff solution (or suspension) in a test tube. Add a little of sodium hydroxide solution till the mixture clears. Then add 2 or 3 drops of copper sulfate solution and shake the test tube. If a violet color appears in the solutions, then proteins is present in the given food stuff.
What is a BALANCED DIET? The diet which contains adequate amounts of all the nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamin and minerals (sufficient for the normal growth and development of the body) is called a balanced diet.
DEFICIANCY DISEASE: A disease which arises due to the lake of nutrients (like carbohydrates , fats , proteins vitamins or minerals ) in our diet over a long period of time ,is called a Deficiency Disease .
PROTIEN DIFICIANCY DISEASE :- The deficiency of proteins in the diet of small children causes a disease known as Kwashiorkor. The main symptoms of protein deficiency in children ( or the main symptoms of kwashiorkor disease in children 0 are the following: The hair of child changes color and becomes red. The skins of child cracks and becomes scaly or rough. The stomach of child becomes swollen or bulges out Swelling on the face or feet also take place The child has stunted growth (slow growth) . The child has reduced résistance to infection. The child has become week and irritable.
PROTIEN AND CARBOHYDRATE DIFICIANCY DISEASES:- The child has become very lean and thin. The child is reduced to just skin and bones, The bones of child show through the skin . The ribs of child look very prominent. The child cannot move due to lack of energy. The growth of child stops completely. The child’s weight becomes very low for his age
VITAMIN DIFICIANCY DISEASES:- The deficiency of vitamin A in the diet causes a disease know as night blindness. The deficiency of vitamin B1in the food causes of a disease known as beri-beri . The deficiency of vitamin C causes a disease known as scurvy . The deficiency of vitamin D in the diet of small children causes of a disease known as rickets
MINERALS DEFICIENCY DISEASE:- Deficiency of calcium:-The deficiency of calcium in the diet of the children causes of a disease called rickets. Deficiency of Iodine: - The deficiency of iodine in the diet of children cause known as Cretinism and The deficiency of iodine in the diet of adult person causes a disease called goiter . Deficiency of iron: - The deficiency of iron in the diet of the children and adult person also causes a disease called Anemia.
