Symptoms depend on which part of the brain is affected. For e.g. in a condition known as Fahr’s syndrome, calcium deposits are observed in basal ganglia and cerebral cortex. Ganglia control motor movements while cerebral cortex is associated with memory and consciousness. Hence the patient experiences trouble with his speech, awareness and body movements. Mild to severe neuropsychiatric symptoms such as headache, inability concentrating, vertigo seizures, dementia can also occur. Diagnosis of calcification is done with the help of X-rays, CT scans and MRI. There is neither a cure nor a standard procedure for treatment of this disease. Course of action is directed towards management of symptoms. Medications are prescribed for epilepsy, obsessive-compulsive disorder and dementia. Mini surgery can be performed to remove faulty parathyroid gland. Hence, unless you have been medically advised to do so, don’t take calcium supplement. And be alert if any of these symptoms occur.
