Nicknamed the 'City of 100 Beaches', Whangarei is the northernmost town in New Zealand and functions as the regional capital of the Northland Region. Agriculture played a major part in sustaining the town while shipping was the main form of transport until such time as the North Auckland railway line was extended to reach the town in 1925. The geography of Whangarei is one that will thrill you visitors. The iconic Mount Parihaka is a volcanic dome that stands at an impressive 241 metres and locals will inform you that it has existed for millions of years. The Parihaka Scenic Reserve with its well maintained gardens possesses walking trails that can be accessed to get to the mountain. Visitors can also check out the Hatea River which flows into the historic Whangarei Harbour. The area is well known for a variety of shopping malls and stores that are sure to attract tourists while those wanting to sample local delicacies can head over to the Four Square food markets at Maunu, Raumanga and Kamo. Additionally sports play a major role in the city with the likes of rugby, field hockey and football taking centre stage. One would do well to be in the area when the Waipu Highland Games, considered to be one of the more popular events in all of Northland, is held. This event takes place every New Year's Day.
