Good Posture, Good Job!

Good Posture, Good Job!

Why is it necessary to improve your appearance when you change jobs, get a job or achieve professional growth within the company where you work?

We live in a visual society, in which television, Internet and new technology make the rules and a picture is worth a thousand words.

This becomes especially important when it comes to employment. From the very first time the interview starts, most of the message we give to our interviewer is nonverbal. Demeanor, dress and speech are the elements that allow us to interact with the other person. The personal image is an indicator of the attitude, enthusiasm, willingness and personality of that person at work.

So your personal image is the cover letter that you have towards your work environment (clients, suppliers, and partners). You must always be careful because a glance can instantly give enough information about your personality.

Your body language speaks louder than your words.

Your behavior is constantly sending messages about what you really think and feel, but do not use any words.

Studies show that words are responsible for only 7% of its message. The remaining 93% is non-verbal: 55% of communication is based on what people see and another 38% is transmitted through tone of voice.

Why take care of your self-image at work?

According to an article published in Equipment and Talent, 40% of organizations provide dress codes. It is increasingly common for executives to hire personality development consultants to improve their style of dress and gesture.

And all because the people working in companies are the ambassadors and heads of the credibility of the products they offer. Therefore, it is very important to take care of all the details in your relationships with customers, suppliers and partners.

The personal image also becomes particularly important when the candidate goes to a job interview. The personal image is a good marketing tool that provides much information about the candidate's personality.

But it must be cleared that our identity is formed not only by physical appearance but also our values, our character and our way of thinking will complement our personality. So, it is not enough to have a clean appearance with no personality nor forget our image because we have a brilliant mind.

How to take care for your professional image?

- Take care of first impression: The first five minutes are important because the impression formed during this time lasts, based on your subsequent behavior. Hygiene, posture, etiquette, education, tone of voice and your way of communicating should be appropriate to the situation.

- Make sure you wear the clothes you feel good in: You should feel comfortable with your clothes. What is important is not that brand but that you are comfortable. Dress appropriately to the situation or employment and your personality (creative or more classic). In a job interview, wear formal clothing.

- Be on time: Punctuality is your first ticket to project your behavior towards your work and makes you look like a responsible person. Always arrives at the set time. And if you'll be late because of any mishap, notify your supervisor by phone.

"Watch your language: Always be aware of your language and be respectful of everyone in your workplace (bosses, colleagues, customers, suppliers). Communication is an important value in all organizations.

- Be careful how you say things: Raising the voice is unpleasant and rude. If you want to improve your tone of voice, record it and then listen to how you sound. This lets you know what you should improve on.

- Take care of body language: Your posture, your gestures, the way you sit in a chair. These are all parts of the image you project in your workplace. In the workplace, good body language is essential to make a good impression. Your body language shows who you are. At work, you are exposed to different situations: meetings with heads, interviews, and clients. You must take appropriate body language for each situation, but without being fake.

Some tips to help in the understanding of body language:

Look: It is important to look in the eyes of the other person because this shows interest in the conversation. But note that a direct gaze for a long time will make you look aggressive and defiant. Experts recommend that during a job interview you should maintain eye contact 80% of the time.

Smile: There is nothing like a natural smile to start a conversation. The smile shows interest, friendliness and comfort. It is also about connecting with another person: People always respond to a smile with a smile.

Walk: Walk straight and hold your head high. This shows confidence.

Shaking hands: The handshake should not be loose, but firm. This shows confidence and etiquette.
