Dieting is no longer just for the very overweight. You’ll rarely meet someone these days who isn’t on some kind of healthy eating or fitness regime and that’s because the world (at least the Western world) is facing a serious obesity epidemic. We live in a world where convenience food that has been jam packed with additives and preservatives are a staple part of many diets. The cheaper, easier to prepare foods are becoming more and more popular with parents who can’t afford to buy fresh produce every week and kids are therefore growing up overweight, unfit and very unhealthy. However, just avoiding these foods is not so simple. Fatty foods surround us: on the high street, in the supermarket, in the form of special offers for takeaways through the letter box, in catering vans outside bars and clubs, in newsagents and petrol stations, in vending machines and even in school tuck shops. We might tell ourselves that we’re not going to eat these foods but at the end of the day, we are fighting a losing battle because unhealthy foods are everywhere. So dieting seems to be the answer but how can we diet when we love junk food so much? Ok, we can just have some willpower right? Wrong! Put yourself on a desert island and then fine, maybe it is easier to say no to a bar of chocolate because you don’t see them everywhere. The world is more like a dessert island, where chocolates, cakes and biscuits are seen and advertised in every possible place and in every possible way. So my point is that we can’t have willpower when our brains are being bombarded with smells and images of the things we shouldn’t have. Sometimes I think it would just be easier to go with Meal Replacement products. Think about it, you know what you’ll be eating so temptation is removed and there are sweet flavours like chocolate and strawberry to curb the sugary cravings. Meal replacement items are also really easy to eat on the go. You know that awful feeling when you haven’t eaten your lunch and have to go shopping after work? You’re wandering the aisles with hunger pangs plaguing your stomach so you pick up everything that looks good – your body and your bank balance suffer because of one missed meal. Wouldn’t it just be easier to have a carton shake or meal replacement bar to quickly gobble down so the hunger is gone in time for your shop? You’ll go home with healthy snacks for the family like fruit and low-fat yoghurt instead of crisps, chocolate and sugary drinks. The amount of temptation around us is just insane these days. It’s no wonder people are piling on the pounds, choosing the convenient option instead of the healthier. But did you know that what you pay for one takeaway pizza meal could feed your family a healthy meal for 3-4 days? It’s true (depending on what meal you make) and for those with a large family who need to be a little healthier, stop forking out for the pizzas and curries and start cooking stir-fry, whole wheat pasta dishes and good, healthy meat alternatives (because too much meat is both unhealthy and expensive).
