Once a teacher or a hopeful decides to take TEFL courses, they may have some confusion about which courses to take. They may also run into several related programs with similar acronyms, and want to make sure they are committing to the right path. Fortunately, there is clear information about which choices to make. Whenever the requirement involves teaching English as a foreign language, then usually TEFL applies. Other related acronyms include ESL, EFL, and TESOL. English as a second language (ESL) refers to the efforts of non-English speakers to learn English. English as a foreign language (EFL) comprises teaching English in a region where English is not generally spoken. This is a subset of TEFL, and specifies that a TEFL certification is being obtained to allow the teacher to operate abroad. This makes a distinction from TEFL teachers who remain in their English-speaking countries in order to teach children of foreign émigrés. Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) is a subset of the teachers who remain in their English-speaking countries, and refer specifically to those teaching in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. In summary, TEFL is the correct acronym, but if you target a specific country (or institution), make sure to use their terminology and make sure that your TEFL courses are appropriate for you choices. Once you have the TEFL understanding sorted out, you may find that there is a range of TEFL courses available. The two certifications with the highest credentials on an international scale or the Cambridge Celta and the Trinity CertTesol. Both the Celta and the CertTesol are supervised by their parent universities. Other programs may advertise as equivalent to Celta and CertTesol, but will not carry the same supervision to standards as the branded courses. Regardless, many schools will still accept the general courses. One provider of TEFL certifications that is probably best avoided are those offered by teaching and training associations, such as the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language. These are worthy organizations to join, but are probably not appropriate to provide your training, as they do not carry the same guarantee of quality. After this discussion, you may recognize that a TEFL certification carries the same ramifications as an education in general. You can get a degree from a community college, and it may have the same name as that you get from a university, but it will not carry the same influence. Similarly, getting a degree from a university as opposed to getting a degree from Cambridge will likewise not command the same level of respect. To get the most substantial TEFL certification, choose the programs with TEFL courses accepted by the widest number of institutions.
