Unfortunately in today’s world, substance addiction is becoming more and more prevalent. Most people have dealt with addiction in their own lives or through a loved one. Addictions ruin the lives of those who have them and those who love people who are addicted to something. Currently, researchers are trying to learn more and more about addiction recovery and helping addicts and their loved ones heal and have happy and healthy lives. Many people find success through working with addiction treatment centers. These centers offer many resources, such as group support, individual therapists, and other specialists. Many approaches are found to be helpful for those overcoming addiction, but many are not working. Some of the approaches that do seem to be helpful are client-centered approaches, cognitive relapse prevention, and twelve-step programs. Client-Centered Approaches For this approach to be true and helpful, the requirements are that the client and therapist have a reciprocal relationship of unconditional positive regard, accurate empathy, and genuineness. This is used for overcoming addictions as well as any other problems. Cognitive Relapse Prevention The four psychosocial processes that back this theory are self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, attributions or causality, and decision-making processes. As addictions stem from multiple layers of life, learning to be in control and knowledgeable about the four processes puts the client back in control of their choices and life. Twelve-Step Programs This program is most known for its success in Alcoholics Anonymous. The backing idea is nature plus nurture, or that the addiction is caused by a biological disease that was nurtured by the person’s environment. The main parts of the program are admitting to or honesty about the addiction, completely turning away from previous lifestyles, and maintaining relationships with a supportive network to stay sober. This program has had the best success with alcohol abuse and can be found at many addiction treatment centers.
