Women in the Bay Area are living the life - a life that's longer, better educated and better paid than their female counterparts inmany other major metropolitan areas, a recent study found. San Francisco lost out only to Washington, D.C., in a nationwidestudy that ranked the 25-most-populous metropolitan areas inwomen's well-being. Measure of America published the study Thursday that ranked regionsbased on an index that factors in women's education , financial prospects and health. Women in the Bay Area were found to live 84.5 years on average, thehighest life expectancy nationwide. Los Angeles and San Diegotrailed just behind, while Baltimore and Detroit ranked at thebottom, just above 80 years.
San Francisco's first-place spot may have something to do with thearea's high percentage of minorities. Asian American women have anaverage life span of almost 89 years, and Latinas have an averagelife span of 85.4 years, the study found. The Bay Area was also third behind Washington, D.C., and Boston interms of female educational achievement, with 43 percent of womenholding at least a bachelor's degree. Bay Area women ranked second - again behind D.C. - in income, with$35,000 in median personal income.
D.C. women brought in a medianof $38,000. Women at the bottom of the ranking - in theRiverside-San Bernardino region - earned a median of $22,000 ayear. - Ellen Huet Worthy of a standing ovation: For 32 minutes and 14 seconds, Kenneth Renshaw stood on a stage earlier this month in Beijing, clutching hisviolin as he played composer Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor. The San Francisco 18-year-old's performance vaulted him into theupper echelons of young violinists, earning him a first place inthe prestigious international Menuhin Competition.
The Ruth Asawa School of the Arts senior said he is stillrecovering from the shock of the win. "I'm so glad that they liked my playing," he said from him homeThursday. "I'm just glad that I was able to get what I had to saymusically out there." The win at Menuhin came with about a $10,000 prize and the one-yearuse of a "fine, old Italian violin," according to the organizers. Renshaw has been accepted to several universities including theJulliard School and is mulling over his choices. Founded 27 years ago by violinist Yehudi Menuhin , the competition is for violinists younger than 22.
Renshaw won inthe senior category for those between 16 and 21. In the junior category, a Bay Area resident also won top honors. Kevin Zhu , an 11-year-old from Cupertino, won about $5,000 and the use ofone of those fine, old violins. The two winners both study with teacher Li Lin , Renshaw said. - Jill Tucker Detours: If your weekend plans involve crossing the Golden Gate Bridge , you might want to rethink that.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, DoyleDrive, the seismically unsafe approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, will be closed. Construction to demolish Doyle Drive is expected to last 57 hours -or until 5 a.m. Monday. Transportation officials are urging driversto stay away from the area.
For those traveling between the North Bay and San Francisco, theGolden Gate Ferry will run additional service, and if you'reheading in by car, transportation officials suggest heading to theEast Bay to take the Bay Bridge. Drivers who insist on crossing the Golden Gate should takeCalifornia Street or Geary Boulevard across town to Highway 1 andbe prepared to wait. - Kristen Go Twitter: @SFCityInsider .
