Granite is one the most versatile and durable countertop materials. It has a naturally non-adhesive surface that is virtually impervious to heat and scratches making it ideal for meal preparation. Vegetables can be chopped directly on the surface, and setting a hot pan of freshly baked cookies directly on it will actually pull the heat from the pan aiding in the cooling process. Integrating granite into a kitchen design adds elegance, functionality and value. Before visiting the granite countertop dealer, be prepared with precise measurements and a detailed sketch of everything affecting the countertop area. Instructions as follows: Firstly, gather specifications for width, height and depth for each appliance that comes in contact with where the new countertop will be. Secondly, measure all surfaces where the granite countertop is to be installed to get the total square footage. Granite is sold in slabs, so when calculating the square footage, include areas for sinks and drop-in appliances, like some cook tops. On a simple rectangular area, start by measuring the wall dimension behind the complete length of the countertop area. Record the measurement in inches. Then measure from the wall to the edge of the countertop. Multiply these two measurements together and divide by 144 to get the square footage. Take the measurements the same way for all sections where the granite will be and add together for the total square footage. On edges requiring an overhang, you must account for another 1 inch, so measure the length that will have an overhang, divide by 144 and add to your total square footage. On areas that are not rectangular, such as on angled countertops, still measure as though it were a complete rectangle, using the portion against the wall--the longest side--for the length measurement. Be sure to add in the measurement of the back splash, if you want it. The standard height for a back splash is 4 inches. Thirdly, sketch the entire area respective to the countertop to scale from an overhead perspective with all counter space and appliance measurements indicated. Fourthly, mark on the sketch the location of all appliances, sinks, outlets, plumbing fixtures, windows, passageways and other obstacles. Mark the exact measurement of each sink with distance from adjacent walls. Ensure that the new sink will fit with room to spare in the cabinet beneath it, length, depth and width-wise, and will have ample room for sink fixtures. Also mark the location of all electrical outlets along with any modification needed to allow for back-splash installation or other fixture issues. Fifthly, set an appointment with a granite countertop dealer. Bring in your preliminary design along with all of the gathered appliance specifications. If you have a copy of the home's blueprints, bringing them along can help answer other questions the dealer may have concerning the layout. Tips & Warnings Remember that granite is a natural stone product and, by relation, is porous requiring periodic sealing to ensure sanitation. Finally, let me have a conclusion.
