https://twitter.com/stonebtb. ">We live in a do-it-yourself world. Need wedding invitations? Make them on a computer. When baby arrives, bed him down in the cradle Grandpa made and cover him with the quilt Grandma stitched. Given our propensity for hand-crafting items that reflect the milestones in our lives, your desire to design your own cemetery monument isn't as unusual as some may conclude. Figure out exactly how you want your monument to look and what you want it to say and your final resting place will be truly unique. Instructions as follows: Firstly, peruse library books on stone designs for ideas. Browse graveyards in your area to view shapes, engraved art, inscription styles and embellishments, and unusual touches, such as a photograph, metal medallions or other decorative items that are becoming more commonplace on gravestones. Secondly, visit the cemetery in which you plan to be laid to rest. Ask administrators of the facility for a guide to monuments to learn height, width, shape and material restrictions for stones. Ascertain the limits to which your phrase, epithet or other text that's to be engraved on the tombstone can be phrased so you don't risk violating the sensibilities of people visiting the cemetery. Thirdly, using a computer, open a document in any software program that offers you drawing tools. Do the math required to figure out how to scale the monument design so you have an idea of the proportional arrangement of the information that's to be chiseled into the stone; for example, if your finished monument size is to be 8 feet tall by 6 feet wide, work within a space on your document that's 8 inches tall by 6 inches wide. Accomplish this task with a sketchpad and pencil if you don't have access to a computer. Fourthly, locate professional stone cutters in your area by calling monument businesses and ask if they take custom orders for translating an original design into a headstone. Take your computer-rendered design or sketch to several businesses to obtain cost estimates. Ask to see samples of the work these cutters have undertaken. Get information from each one about their experiences cutting the most popular monument garden stones: basalt, limestone, sandstone, marble and alabaster. Compare at least three estimates before choosing one. Fifthly, use the guidelines you received from the cemetery in conjunction with the monuments you liked during the research phase of the design process to finalize the text you wish to have engraved on your monument sandstone; if you have access to a quarry, go there to pick the slab of stone the cutter will use to turn your design into the legacy you'll leave behind when you depart this earth. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
