Slate is a durable rock for patios and walkways, but even the most durable building materials can crack and break. The good news is that replacing a blue slate patio stone is easier than it may seem. First determine whether your blue slate patio is made on a sand bed or with mortar. If it is a sand bed, just dig up the sand around the cracked stone and take it out. If the stone is set in place with mortar, however, you will need to remove the mortar from around the stone. Instructions as follows: Firstly, chisel away the mortar surrounding the broken piece of slate. Use a stone chisel and angle it toward the damaged stone. This will prevent the chisel from damaging neighboring pieces of slate tile. Keep chiseling until the mortar is broken on all sides of the stone. Secondly, break the damaged stone into smaller pieces by gently pounding it with a rubber mallet. Do not pound too hard with the hammer. Pounding too hard could damage nearby stones. Thirdly, remove the broken pieces of stone and break up the mortar that was below the stone with the chisel. Once you have broken up all the mortar, use a shop vacuum to pick up any leftover debris. Fourthly, fit a replacement piece of slate in the hole. If the stone is too large for the space, you can use a hammer and a chisel to form the stone into the shape and size that is appropriate. Also be sure that the replacement cubic stone is not too small. The stone must be large enough to be level with the stones surrounding it. Fifthly, spray a small amount of water into the hole with a spray bottle. The area inside the hole should be damp before pouring any mortar. Next, mix a batch of mortar by following the directions on the package of mortar mix. Spread the mortar along the bottom of the hole. Then put the paving stone on top of the mortar and press it firmly into place. Put a level on top of the new stone to make sure that it is level with neighboring stones. Once the stone is level, allow the mortar to dry overnight. Sixthly, mix another batch of mortar and put it in a grout bag. Use the spray bottle again to dampen the area around the new piece of slate, then fill the area around the new stone with mortar by squeezing it out of the grout bag. Smooth the grout around the stone by using a trowel. Let this new batch of mortar dry overnight. Tips & Warnings Replacement pieces of blue slate can be found at quarries and some garden stores.
