The first shaft collar produced in series were used in the first factories in the transmission tree: it was rigid collars with protruding set screws. Just that boss determined the main difficulties of application: it was considered very dangerous because its rotation could cling to the clothing of the workers, dragging them into the machine. Improvements came in the early 900 with the invention of SPS Technologies, who invented the first collar with grub screws recessed head: this patent soon became the benchmark in the sector. Their operation is based on the holding power of the screw that locks onto: the ideal application would be on a tree softer material of the screw, which can cling to avoid sliding down the tree. However this mechanism restricts the applications of the device because it can not be adjusted to avoid ruining, aesthetically and functionally, numerous materials. The shaft collars are particular models of clamping rings used in the assembly to position or to block a component (typically a bearing) or as an end stop.
