Not everything in life is as straightforward as your parents make it out to be. Sure, if you stay focused in the classroom, avoid trouble, and have a professional field that you are interested in, it is relatively easy to follow a well defined path. However, there are bumps in every road, and what your parents don't tell you is that sometimes veering off course is not only acceptable, but good. For Mike going to school was always difficult. It is not that he wasn't smart or focused, he just didn't have a passion for math, science or writing. He was competent at all of the subjects, but when he graduated from high school he had no academic pursuit that he was excited about pursuing. He went off to college, because that's what you are supposed to do, but now given an option to attend classes, and because his time was spent learning about things he wasn't interested in, his days at school were numbered. What Mike was passionate about was working with his hands. He loved studying and rebuilding used cars. He smiled when he looked under the hood. He enjoyed knowing the intricacies of different models. Solving the puzzle of how all the parts worked and troubleshooting problems was Mike's idea of a fun afternoon. After dropping out of school Mike took a job working at a bar. He would get to work around 3pm and leave after midnight. He found himself getting lazy, sleeping all morning, and not finding time to do the things he enjoyed. One day, while at the bar, a customer began talking about all of the problems he had experienced with used cars. The guy was telling his friend how he would only buy vehicles from dealers because he kept getting stuck with lemons. Mike overheard this conversation and asked the customer what sort of problems he had experienced. As it turns out, the guy had bought used cars for each of his kids, and at the first sign of a problem, his wife had decided they weren't safe enough for their precious children. Mike asked the customer if he still had the lemons and whether he'd like a hand in trying to fix them. After the customer thought about Mike's offer, he said that if there was a time Mike wanted to come over and look at the used cars, he could certainly do so. When Mike did, he quickly diagnosed what was going on, and after a few tries, and a bunch of trips to the store to buy various tools and parts, the used cars were running like new. The customer was so taken aback at how quickly Mike fixed things, he asked him if instead of paying him, he could give him one of the vehicles. Mike said sure, he wasn't expecting any money to start with, and when he sold the vehicle he then realized his niche could be flipping vehicles. Buying an automobile after it had been in an accident, fixing it up, and selling it was a legitimate business. He would enjoy the work, make money, and not be forced to serve drinks until midnight everyday. Dropping out of college can be looked at as a negative, but for Mike, working at a bar led to an opportunity that he seized. He finally found his passion. Getting to work with his hands everyday, and knowing that the quicker and better work he does, the more cash he'll make, and this has made him focused, efficient, and passionate.
