Working in a call center was just not what Mark had envisioned for employment. It wasn't that he disliked the job that much, he just had such different aspirations. He was on the fast track as an emergency medical technician and loved his job. It was the right amount of adrenaline, helping people, and moving around for his personality. Being involved in medicine was what he had wanted to do throughout high school and college, and while his grades were never competitive enough for medical school, he was a natural at first response and giving immediate and short term help to people who really needed it. Of course, there were more than enough cases of young stupidity, false alarms, and hypochondriacs, but even with that he loved that he got to travel around and wasn't confined to an office. Then one night, when he had had a really long week and was on hour seventeen of an eighteen hour shift, he just needed a little pick-me-up. Knowing it was a bad idea, he took some drugs from the ambulance he was working in to help keep him going for the last hour. When they got back to their garage that day he was subjected to a drug test, and of course failed. With one stupid mistake, he had thrown his whole career away and would never work around controlled substances, much less in the medical field, again. After the wallowing attempts to get his job back, appealing to the board and attempting to convince people it was a one-time mistake, all failed, he had to move on. There were bills to pay and that was hard to accomplish without an income. He saw an add one day for employment at a call center that was close to his house. He applied and was hired, telling himself he would work there just until he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. That was nine years ago. Not only had he never figured out what he wanted to do, but all the other jobs that he applied for he either did not get past the interview process, or he was denied employment because of his drug discipline. Eventually, he gave up and quit trying. Mark thought about leaving the call center from time to time. It was a scary proposition to go out and forge a new path at his age, even though 10 years had passed and he could quit having to disclose his reason for dismissal at this point, which would theoretically make the process a little easier. But more than that, he was comfortable in his routine, he had made some friends in his job, and it was a reliable income. In a way, even though Mark was never going to get to do the one job he wanted to, he was grateful for what he had and knew that there was never an excuse that could stymie the regret of certain mistakes.
