Black tie events do not come along that often for the average person. When they do though, you want to know exactly how to dress. If you are clueless about what to wear when an invitation arrives for you in the mail, you first need to understand exactly what black tie means. Once you have deciphered that, you must determine what level of black tie the occasion calls for. These kinds of events can be referred to in different ways. One of those ways is if an invitation reads, "Black Tie Preferred" or "Black Tie Preference." What this means is that your first choice should be a tuxedo or a floor length gown. If for some reason that attire is not possible, you will still gain entry if you are wearing a dressy outfit, such as for a man, the best suit you own, and for a woman, a cocktail dress such as your little black dress (LBD). If you can dress in a black tie ensemble, you are encouraged to do so. Some events will be labeled as "Black Tie Optional." This phrasing gives you a better idea of what is expected of guests who attend the social occasion. Do not dress down for such an extravaganza or you will be underdressed. You can decide to wear the full garb (as described above), or you can wear a dressy outfit even if it is not the most fancy and most elegant pieces of clothing that you own. What you wear must lean more towards formal than informal wear, however. At optional galas, the crowd will likely be split. Knowing what to wear to these events is not always a simple task. If you are on the fence about how to dress and you know other people who will be attending, inquire about the choices they are making for their attire. Doing this should help to put your mind at ease about the choice you make. Less often used is the term "Black Tie Creative." This is the least formal of the three, but it is still formal. What it means is as a man, you can switch your white tuxedo shirt for a black shirt, or add a red or purple tie to add flavor or character to your ensemble if you wish. Ladies have more options when it comes to gown colors. If you have a flair for fashion and drama, you may wish to wear a color that is not common at such events. You may even wish to adorn your head with a tiara if the occasion would be fitting for one. To enjoy yourself at a fancy gala, you need to dress the part. By knowing which type of occasion it will be, you will know what to wear so you will be in tune with the rest of the room.
