For Head Chef and owner Paul Hoather, it’s been a 20 year love affair. What started in a quaint old white house (hence the name), in Willis St, it has become a fine dining wellington icon after moving to its current location in Oriental Bay in 1999. Now run by Paul and his wife Louise, they have both seen many changes over the years. Gone are the heady days of long agency lunches. Instead it’s a choice of ala carte or a bistro menu for lunch or early evening on your way to one of the capitals many and varied events. However with a degustation menu available, there is still the chance to leisurely take your time and savour the magnificent fare, if you so desire. Introduced a number of years ago, it takes dining to an exceptional level, with an equally exquisite wine match for each of the many and varied courses. With the food being described as modern NZ with influences including molecular gastronomy from cutting edge styles around the World World Class Dining at The White House Restaurant world, it’s not hard to see why the restaurant has lasted so long. On the roof of the building, Paul grows his own herbs and lettuces, with the best seasonal ingredients sourced from around the country. The many accolades have continued over the last 12 months with the White House not only being a finalist in the Cuisine Restaurant of the year awards 2012, but they also won the inaugural Visa Wellington On a Plate award! Besides the world class fare on offer, restaurant manager Rob Scott has worked with single vineyards with a natural focus, in putting a wine list together that reflects the regions and sites the wines are from. The word Terroir, comes to mind, which loosely translated from French means “ a sense of place” . In a way, the word is apt for the entire White House Restaurant. As you sit, overlooking the Oriental Bay vista, you can’t help but think…”this really has a sense of place”. To book your fine dining in Wellinton: Ph: +64 4 385 8555 or head to www.whr.co.nz
