In addition to his certifications, Jon Vinikoor obtained his Personal Training degree from the National Personal Training Institute. Furthermore, he has his 500 Hour State-Approved Department of Education Diploma in Personal Training. Jon Vinikoor believes that it is absolutely crucial for personal trainers to have proper education along with multiple certifications. Here Jon Vinikoor offers tips on how to appropriately prepare for a CPT, or certified personal trainer exam. - Find course materials. Jon Vinikoor notes that there are study materials available specific to each exam. Materials can include books, flashcards, and even online tools. Individuals can purchase study packages directly from certifying organizations or from textbook providers. Certifying organizations generally come out with new materials each year, so make sure books are up-to-date!
- Role-play. Jon Vinikoor states that a huge portion of every personal training exam is the practical portion. To prepare for these questions, Jon Vinikoor suggests practicing measuring flexibility, measuring body fat, and completing cardio evaluations on friends or family.
- Use sticky notes. Jon Vinikoor recommends that individuals studying for their exam use sticky notes to label the moving parts of their body. This will give individuals the ability to study muscles and joint movements in a hands-on manner.
- Flash cards.Jon Vinikoor warns that there are several definitions and formulas on the exam—so be prepared. People should construct flashcards so they can study whenever they have a free moment.
- Take practice exams. Jon Vinikoor is convinced you can never take too many practice exams. Practice exams can be easily found online and generally contain questions from previous exams. There is no better preparation than answering questions that were directly off the test.
- Dedicate enough time. In general, Jon Vinikoor notes that individuals studying to become a certified personal trainer spend three to six months actively engaging in study materials. Since individuals often study for the exam independently, Jon Vinikoor recommends creating a study plan and sticking to it. It is important to stay on track once a test day has been established.
