Florence or the Power of Seduction

Travel & Tourism
It's called the “Stendhal Syndrome”. The name comes from the famous French novelist, who on January 22, 1817 visited Florence. Uponentering the church of Santa Croce, Stendhal felt overwhelmed by so much beauty, to the point that he started to have palpitations and nearly fainted. In 1979, Graziella Magherini, an Italian psychiatrist, identified the same state in hundreds of tourists and so, the writer’s emotions became a standard formula within psychiatric treatises.

We told you this because in Italy, aesthetic, sensorial, spiritual, and intellectualenjoyment can be experienced at every step, like in a real hedonistic feast – afeast for the mind and soul. Consider yourselves forewarned: you have to be ready for thetorrent of beauty that awaits you in Florence.

Florence is a continuous display of masterpieces. Led by the Medici family in the past, one of the richest and most influential families in Italy, and proclaimed the city of Godby Girolamo Savonarola, Florence is home to Brunelleschi's Dome, the Giotto Bell Tower, the Uffizi Gallery (where you can see works by da Vinci, Michelangelo Raphael, Tiziano, Botticelli, Caravaggio and many others), thePitti Palace, and the Palace of the Florentine Renaissance, the great rival of the Ufizzi Galleries.

Landmarks in Florence

Tourists visit Tuscany and Florence for countless reasons. Florence is the heart of the Renaissance, Siena and Cinque Terre (five fishing villages built into the rocks between the beach and the hills). It provides wonderful naturalsights and romantic landscapes dotted with medieval castles and heritage.

The Florence Dome

Its official name is Santa Maria deiFiori and it is one of the most spectacular and most beautiful buildings – notonly in town, but in all of Italy, and perhaps in the entire world. Built over 170 years ago, it benefited from the contribution of famous names in the arts, such as Brunelleschi and Giotto. It is fascinating for its size and colors. Dressed in green, white and reddish marble brought in from Carrara, Prato and Siena, it fills your soul with beauty and joy, as it reaches for perfection.

San Miniato al Monte

San Miniatois the first martyr of Florence. The legend says that he was beheaded during the persecutions against Christians in the year 250. It is said that after he was beheaded, the saint rosefrom the ground, crossed the River Arno and climbed into the Monsignor Fiorentino, where he lived in the hermitage. A shrine for him was built in the eighth century and the construction of the church that we see todaybeganin the eleventh century.

Situated in a quiet and very beautiful palce, San Miniato al Monte impresses tourists with its white marble facade and green geometric shapes, which bestow a sense of harmony and balance. You will be surprised to find a zodiac wheel on the floor of the church, by the entrance, and you will be happy to leave with a souvenir from the gift shop, where you can find products made by the monks of San Miniato.

Piazza Michelangelo

It is one of the most picturesque places in the city, which offers a dreamy view over Florence. You might think you were in a postcard. From here you can see the entire city, the river that runs around it, itsbridges, and the great Dome. And if you have a penny on you, you can glimpse through a telescope at the Palazzo Pitti (the former residence of the Medici family), the Ufizzi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio and many other wonders housed in Florence.
