There is literally no self-respecting casino on God’s green earth that doesn’t have blackjack on its list of games. This is the most widely played banking casino game in the world. But what exactly are its rules and how did it come about? This article proposes a basic examination of this famous card game. Apparently, the first written reference to this game is by the famous Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes(of Don Quijote de la Mancha fame), in the tale called Rinconete y Cortadillo, included in the short story collection known as Novelas Ejemplares, published in 1613. A gambler himself, Cervantes describes the exploits of 2 rogues who have a habit of cheating at a game called ventiuno (21, which is another name by which the game called blackjack is known). The popularity of the game is due to its easy-to-understand rules, which makes it playable not only in casinos, but as a form of friendly entertainment with no monetary stakes as well. The winner of the game is the player whose card sum nears or hits 21. Each player initially gets 2 cards which will be shown to everyone who is a participant in the game. The dealer also gets 2 cards, of which one is facing down. After the cards have been assigned to the players, each player has a chance to have the sum of his/her cards as 21 or near 21. Cards from 2 to 10 have their value written upon them, whilst the ace can value either 1 or 11, according to the preference of the player. After each player has got their cards, they have 4 options on how to play. Hit means that the player has chosen to take another card to get 21 or near. Stand is when the player chooses not to take any more cards. Double down is when the stakes are doubled and the player takes only one card (this only happens when the player is sure that his cards have a sum that is higher than 19) Split occurs when the player has 2 cards of the same value, which can be used to form 2 hands, which are to be played according to the usual rules. Sometimes, the option of Surrender can be used as well, which gives the player the opportunity to retire from the game after receiving his 2 cards (usually occurs when the sum is 14 or 15). So if you’re looking for a classic card game that’s easy to play and fun, try blackjack. There’s a good chance you might enjoy this one without being a casino afficionado.
