By Savitha Hira Photography: Courtesy Studio Osmosis At Golden Grill fine dine, Bengaluru, architects Shilpa and Sameer Balvally of Studio Osmosis use burning coal as an inspiration and augment the restaurant with a faceted ambience that is also its USP. Sitting on the roof-top in a mixed-use neighbourhood, in close proximity to the World Trade Centre, the 4300 sq. ft. diner with its singularly eye-catching ceiling feature unfolds as a space of intrigue to its visitors. The main area of the restaurant – the central platform marks a grand welcome with its back-lit pitched roof that is the cynosure of all eyes; and as one looks around, one is spoilt for choice with several private dining options on a split level. An exercise in refurbishing, the restaurant interiors have been revived into a brand new fabric by juxtaposing old furniture with new-like-old add-ons and a chic decor that has completely transformed the space with its metallic antique furnishings and warmth. “Burning coal creates a captivating pattern of light and shadow,” elucidates Shilpa and this facet has been translated into the interior shell in white and into the golden-hued ceiling with a mix of gypsum and Plaster of Paris. The concept of faceted geometry is used and emphasized in tune with the existing slopes of the roof with the central column being the main trunk of the faceted tree. The facets also aid in creating the perfect ambient and rich lighting design. The site-responsive design uses the existing site to its advantage. Having an operational kitchen and ducting etc., already in place, the seating arrangement with a private table cover for large groups of 14-16 guests; cordoned off with a contemporary version of the traditional jali in a distinctive ambience – where no two private zones look alike, are a definitive plus for guests looking for privacy in style. This also gainfully utilizes the split levels of the space and breaks away from the generic pattern of fine dine hospitality. Keeping the element of intrigue intact is a glass tread-edge lit staircase that leads up to another lounge area at the upper level – yet another distinctive space for restaurant-hopping guests, who are forever looking for a new ambience – a new vibe. to view images click on www.indiaartndesign.com
