We have all been there. We see a beautiful automobile that we simply fall in love with and we have got to have it. We are emotionally tied to this vehicle, and whether or not we can actually afford it is little more than an afterthought. That is, of course, until we get that first month's bill, and the sticker shock has hit us square between the eyes. How can you avoid putting yourself in this situation, and not only that, but actually drive off of the lot knowing that you paid a reasonable price for an automobile that you can afford? Let's see if we can figure this out as we explore this topic a bit further.

Like most anything else, when it comes to winning the war at car dealerships, the first thing to do is your homework. Before stepping foot on the lot, know what other people have paid for the vehicle that you are interested in. Not only that, know what the seller has paid as well. You may even be able to negotiate a price for an automobile that you are interested in before leaving your home. Many automobile sellers have online agents that will actually quote you prices for certain vehicles over email. In this case, simply negotiate the price you want online, and then bring in the printed email for verification.

Whether you find yourself price haggling online or in person, be sure that you are well aware of any specials that car dealerships may be offering. Do not expect a salesperson to supply this information to you, since their commission is based on how much they sell. Most sellers have various rebates, cash incentives, and giveaways. You just have to make sure that you are informed on all of these before stepping foot on the lot.

Believe it or not, but some days on the calendar are better to purchase an automobile than others. Car dealerships generally need to meet monthly sales goals, so buying at the end of the month can possibly save you some money. The same holds true for the end of the year. Not only are there sales goals, but sellers also have to clear out inventory to make room for newer models.

Another weapon you may or may not have at your disposal is a trade-in. Used vehicles are actually at a premium right now because there is short supply. Find out how much your automobile is worth beforehand, and use it as a bargaining chip to pay the price that you want for the vehicle that you really want.

Finally, when working with car dealerships, you cannot let emotions get in the way of critical thinking. In the end, you can either afford a vehicle or you cannot. Regardless of how much you like an automobile, it is imperative that you keep a sober mind about it. This can help in negotiating a price as well. If a seller sees that you are hooked, he or she will be a lot less willing to go down in price. After all, you are poised to purchase the vehicle regardless. When making this purchase, then, just use your head, not your heart.
