Homemade garden stepping stones are a fun weekend project for adults and children. Stepping stones are practical, providing a clean place for walking through the garden. They also can be whimsical, if you want to create a path displaying colorful embellishments. You can purchase stepping-stone kits, complete with embellishments, at most craft stores. Or you can make your own stones by purchasing concrete mix from a home improvement store and using aluminum pie plates, or similar objects, for molds. Then add a variety of embellishments to create a one-of-a-kind path. Instructions as follows: Firstly, arrange shells, beads, beach glass, marbles and other colorful accessories on top of the concrete after you pour it into the stepping-stone mold. Plan a specific design by laying out your items on a clean sheet of paper, or create the pattern as you go. Secondly, push the embellishments gently into the concrete so they are level with, or slightly below, the surface. Items sitting above the surface of the concrete could be a tripping hazard or break easily. Thirdly, allow the concrete to set up slightly. Carve designs, letters or numbers into the concrete while it is still moist. Clean your diamond tool often by wiping off excess concrete with a rag. Fourthly, push your (or your child's) clean hand or foot into the concrete to create handprints or footprints. Wash your hand or foot immediately afterward to avoid any irritation from the drying concrete. Imprint other interesting designs, such as leaves or shells, by pressing them into the concrete, then carefully lifting them up. Fifthly, push small ceramic tiles or shards of broken tile into the concrete to create your own mosaic stepping stone. Sixthly, pour concrete into a stepping-stone mold and allow it to cure. Remove the stone from the mold. Decorate it with exterior paint formulated for concrete, using stencils or freehand designs, or even painting the entire stone. Tips & Warnings Use white embellishments, such as tumbled glass, paving stones or shells, to make stepping stones for a moon garden. Press a pie tin into the concrete while it is still wet to create large divots in your stepping stones where water can collect for birds and insects. Some of the ingredients in concrete can be irritating to skin. Wear gloves while mixing and pouring concrete for your stepping stones. Rinse your hands each time they come in direct contact with wet concrete. Twigs, leaves and other natural objects are not suitable embellishments for stepping stones because they eventually will biodegrade, leaving empty pockets in the stones.
