Oak cabinets only look as good as the finish that's over the wood. The finish is generally wood stain topped with polyurethane or some other type of gloss. The gloss can get dull and discolored with age, diminishing the natural beauty of the wood underneath. To refurbish the cabinets is a painstaking process which involves chemically stripping off the gloss, sanding off the old stain and re-applying new layers of both. It's a lot of work, but you'll end up with what looks like brand new oak cabinets. Instructions as follows: Firstly, tape newspaper on the walls and floor around the cabinets. Use your screwdriver to remove the hinges, knobs and other hardware from the cabinets. Set the doors aside on more newspaper. Secondly, open your chemical stripping compound, and put on rubber gloves. Brush the stripper onto the surface of the cabinet, covering a few square feet. Let it sit for a few minutes until the finish bubbles and wrinkles. Thirdly, scrape off the softened finish with a plastic putty knife. Scrub the area with a rough nylon pad, getting up any remaining spots of finish. Fourthly, wipe down the surface with cotton rags soaked in paint thinner. Let it dry overnight. Fifthly, sand all the cabinet surfaces with a pad sander and 100-grit sandpaper, taking up the top layer of stained wood and exposing the bare wood underneath. Sand with the grain of the wood. Switch to 300-grit sandpaper, and sand it again to smooth out the surface. Clean up the dust by running tack cloths around it. Sixthly, stain the kitchen cabinet in sections, brushing the stain onto the wood and letting it sit for one to two minutes. Wipe off the excess with cotton cloths. Let the stain dry overnight. Seventhly, brush on polyurethane gloss, starting at the top of the cabinet and working your way down. Use thin, even strokes to prevent the formation of bubbles. Let it dry overnight. Eighthly, use 300-grit sandpaper to sand the gloss on the cabinet (by hand, not with the pad sander). Sand very lightly, just enough to dull the shine so the next layer of gloss will stick. Wipe the dust with tack cloths. Ninthly, brush on a second coat of polyurethane. Let it dry, sand it and apply a third coat. Don't sand the third coat. Let it cure for about 48 hours before re-assembling the cabinet. Finally, let me have a short E-platform of promoting stone industry, we are the world leading portal website in stone industry.
