"But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory." - Mark 13:24-26 Do you have any idea what those three Bible verses mean? Exactly! It talks about the world coming to its end. So when will the world truly end? Let’s take a look at 2 other verses: “But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come.” – Mark 13:33-34 According to the Bible, no one really knows when the world would end. Yet, why are there a number of prophecies cited which gave nothing but fear to humankind? Let’s take a look at five of the most famous doomsday prophecies made, such are: 1. Harold Camping – September 1994 A former engineer, Harold Camping, believed that the Bible has numerical codes, which reveal the exact month and year of when the apocalypse will take place. According to Camping, the end of the world would come on September 1994. But when the world was still in one piece on that day, he confirmed that the research was insufficient. 2. Halley’s Comet – May 1910 Once every 75 years, Halley’s Comet, passes by Earth. Nevertheless, a group of astronomers from Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory claimed that the comet, which would pass by on May 1910, would cause Armageddon. More so, it was believed that the comet’s tail is composed of toxic cyanogens gas and would trigger death to the people across the world. The astronomers’ warning instilled fear and a number of opportunists took advantage. Cheaters (scammers) sold countless ‘comet pills’, bottled oxygen and masks which were said to protect the people from the comet’s poisonous gas. Unfortunately, when the comet passed by, it never even killed a single soul. 3. Y2K – Year 2000 Who could ever forget the kind of fear brought by the Y2K to the entire world? In the computer world, dates were only abbreviated into two digits (1996 would simply be 96). No one had a problem with this until the coming of year 2000. According to sources, major inaccurate calculations would take place as a new century would arrive. Numerous individuals believed that this glitch would trigger the end of the world. Fortunetellers and mystics even predicted using La Tarot cards that many colossal objects would fall from the sky. Airplanes would crush from above, elevators plummeting down from the top of skyscrapers and even the world economy would be greatly affected. Because of these terrifying predictions, the American government spent billions of dollars just to ascertain that this Y2K issue would be resolved. Again, the apocalypse triggered by the Y2K was only a prediction and not a fact. 4. Large Hadron Collider – 2009-2012 If you are not a fan of physics, then the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is something you might want to know. An advanced machinery located in Geneva, Switzerland, it delivers hydrogen protons which crash to one another with the speed of light. This function enables scientists to discover brand new particles and elements which may give new information on how the universe formed. A few theorists believed that this humongous object could create black holes that could devour the entire planet. A lawsuit has been made to stop this activity. But once it has been proven to be completely safe, it was dismissed. Despite the controversies, no black holes emerged and in return, astounding feats were discovered. 5. The Mayan Calendar – December 21, 2012 Astrologia Maya (Mayan Astrology) became very famous when the movie “2012” was released in 2009. The Mayan Calendar is divided into various cycles wherein one indicated that the apocalypse would occur on December 21, 2012. Many theories were also mentioned regarding how the world would end. Some claimed that the Earth would collide with another planet or a giant comet would crash into it. However, scientists find this theory ludicrous. According to them, they would have noticed it a few years earlier if Earth would face a dilemma to another celestial body.
