If you have saggy eyelids, wrinkles or if fat collects under your lower eyelid, they can make you look as if you are aged. Removing the extra fat collected under your eyelids and tightening the wrinkles, you can look younger again. This can be done through Blepharoplasty commonly called as eyelid surgery. Things to know before you undergo eyelid surgery: Board certified plastic surgeon from Westchester, Dr. John F. Farella1 tells-“Eyelid surgery can be done alone, or can be performed in conjunction with a face-lift, or other facial procedures. The upper eyelid incisions are camouflaged in the natural eyelid fold. The lower eyelid incisions are designed just below the lash line. Through this incision excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed. In some cases, the underlying muscle will be tightened. The incisions eventually fade and blend into the natural creases of the eye.”(Ref: John F. Farella, M.D., FACS, http://www.drfarella.com/procedures/eyelid.asp) 1. Types of Blehpharoplasty A patient can choose to have surgery on the upper, lower, or both eyelids. The followings options are available: - Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty : In this procedure the lower eyelid incision is placed inside the lower lid. This technique cannot remove excess skin and cannot be used with every patient.
- Upper eyelid surgery which uses a laser
- Double Eyelid Surgery
2. Treatable conditions: - Excess fat deposits under eyelids.
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds of the upper eyelid./
- Patients with excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
- Patients with puffy "bags"
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids.
3. Ideal Candidates - Healthy persons who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions.
- Patients with realistic expectations.
- Patients who are doing the procedure for the right reasons (i.e. for themselves).
4. Risks and Complications - Risks and complications may include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, scarring, damage to deeper structures, asymmetry, nerve injury, improper healing, numbness, allergic reactions, and risks and complications associated with anesthesia. Although complications can occur, they are rare.
- Smokers have a greater risk of skin loss, pulmonary, and wound healing complications.
5. Recovery - Following surgery, you may temporarily experience blurred vision, tightness around the eyes, discomfort, bruising, and swelling.
- After two weeks, non-strenuous exercise may be resumed, and you may wear contact lenses if needed. For several months the skin around your eyes should be treated with extra care.
- You should apply sun block on your eyelids and use sunglasses to protect your eyes from the environment.
- As with all cosmetic procedures, the final result will be apparent by about one year.
Before going for any type of cosmetic surgery, do thorough research on the procedure as well as the surgeon. Each surgeon needs to have a certain amount of credential and educational background in order to perform the plastic surgery.
