Migraine is a common problem among millions of Americans. About 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. According to the National Headache Foundation Women are more prone to migraine when compared to men. And, still doctors are not clear about what causes migraines, nor do they know which drugs will best help which patients. Dr. Bahman Guyuron has developed a surgical procedure for Migraine prevention that has been a topic of conversation for a few years. A procedure called nerve decompression is offering more permanent relief. The procedure was accidentally discovered during a facelift surgery. He found that more than 80 percent of patients who underwent surgery in one of three “trigger sites” significantly reduced their occurance of headaches compared with more than 55 percent of the group who had sham surgery. More than half of the patients with the real surgery reported a “complete elimination” of headaches compared with about 4 percent of the placebo group. Sometimes, migraine surgery doesn’t involve the forehead at all. It varies according to where the patient’s trigger sites are: forehead, temples or back of the head. The theory behind the surgery is that because some migraines are caused when sensitive nerve branches are squeezed and irritated by muscles, deactivating those muscles could bring prolonged relief. In the off-label use of Botox for migraines, those same muscles — when paralyzed with Botox injections — have eased headaches in some patients for roughly three months. The procedure entails severing tiny muscles and other tissues pressing on and irritating headache-trigger nerves. The incisions are hidden beneath the forehead hairline and behind the nape of the neck. Forehead lifts, might result in a longer-lasting, perhaps permanent, alleviation of pain. DR. John F. Farella1, Westchester Based Plastic Surgeon Says about the Face Lift procedure, “Face lift surgery, also known as Rhytidectomy, is a procedure that is used to reshape or contour the lower two-thirds of the face. A face lift will provide tightening of the skin and muscles to improve cheek, jowl, and neck contour. A forehead lift or brow-lift corrects the upper one third of the face. It raises the brows to a higher level, removes lines that run across the forehead, and removes lines that run vertically between the eyebrows. Forehead lifts also aid in correcting upper eyelid ptosis.” (Ref: Dr. John F. Farella, M.D, FACS, http://www.drfarella.com/procedures/faceLift.asp ) Forehead lifts are cosmetic procedures that plastic surgeons typically perform to smooth furrowed brows. A classic forehead lift for cosmetic effect differs significantly from surgery for migraine sufferers. The latter removes frown muscles more thoroughly and entails padding nerves with fatty tissue. Migraine surgery is covered by some insurance companies, but is considered experimental by others. Without insurance, migraine surgery starts at $5,000, depending on how many trigger points are addressed. Disclaimer: Information on this page is not a substitute for medical consultation or advice.
