By Gabriella Souza The Virginian-Pilot June 3, 2012 AVON, N.C. Visions swam into Joe Thompson's mind when he eyed the vacantoceanfront property across the street from his business on HatterasIsland. He saw visitors sipping cold beer and listening to the tinklingmandolins of a live bluegrass band as they gazed at white-cappedwaves. He imagined brides and bridegrooms swaying during theirfirst dance.
He visualized arms stretching toward sunny skiesduring yoga classes. There was no place on Hatteras for all that, but this place mightwork, he thought. The property already had a swimming pool, bathhouses and atwo-level wooden walkway painted white, perfect for sunbathing. Ithad been part of the amenities for the Kinnakeet Shores housingcommunity. There was one problem he had to consider last fall: Was it the timeright to buy 2-1/2 acres to build an open-air theater? Thompson likes to take chances, though.
He'd taken a big one afterhe graduated from the University of North Carolina when he pedaledhis bike four days from Chapel Hill to move to Avon to windsurf.Nearly 30 years later, he owns Koru Village, a 30,000-square-foothealth and wellness center. So he bought the property for $680,000. He spent the next sixmonths fixing it up and building a theater with space for 200guests. The venue is open to the Atlantic breezes, with a roof andoptional doors providing protection from the elements.
It's thoughtto be the only oceanfront theater in North Carolina. Thompson will start to see whether his gamble pays off Monday, whenthe Beach Klub opens. The Papawack Theatre will have its grandopening June 12, featuring the Doerfels, a band made up of 11family members who play various styles of music, includingbluegrass. He plans a three-pronged approach to the Beach Klub. The theaterwill host morning yoga classes.
The pool will be open during thelate morning and afternoon. Live music, musicals and events such aspig-pickings will entertain beachgoers at night. The theater can accommodate weddings, tapping into a vibrantindustry on the Outer Banks. Some say the idea fills a niche. "That's one thing we miss a lot is live music and liveperformances," said Laura Heitsenrether, who is active in theOuter Banks Chamber of Commerce.
County Commissioner Allen Burrus applauded Thompson for conceivinga way to serve tourists and locals. "The time has come to belooking for new ideas," Burrus said. Thompson's parents, who are both avid theater and live-musiclovers, inspired the venture, he said. "Papaw-ack" is acondensed version of their nicknames, "Papaw" and"Ack." "It had always been my intention that my parents would be herefor the grand opening," Thompson said.
But his father, whomThompson calls his sensei, has terminal cancer, so the pair can'tmake the trip from their home in Hendersonville, N.C. Instead, Thompson had a friend make a painting of the theater andBeach Klub. He delivered it to them so they can look at theirnamesake, their son's vision.
