Scuba Diving Seasons in Malaysia

Recreation & Leisure
Malaysia is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, attracting 25 million visitors annually. Each year, over 400,000 tourists from the United Kingdom flock to Malaysia, thanks in large part to the country's beautiful coastlines and excellent scuba diving.

Travellers who wish to take advantage of the great scuba diving in Malaysia should plan their holidays accordingly. Though scuba diving in Malaysia is always beautiful, there are specific times of year that are better than others for a variety of reasons. Likewise, some spots offer better scuba diving than others. Pick the right spot at the right time for a scuba diving holiday that will never be forgotten.

Malaysian Borneo is a popular choice for divers because the scuba experience is offered year-round. Divers can expect to see exotic ocean-life, coral reefs, hanging gardens, or an intricate cave system. The most trafficked dive site in Malaysian Borneo is Barracuda Point, located off of Sipadan Island. This spot offers great views of barracudas. In April and May, divers in Lankayan can see whale sharks. Hammerhead sharks show up in this location in March as well as in Layang Layang.

Though it is possible to dive any time of the year, the best diving occurs outside of the rainy season. Rainfall can make diving dangerous. It can also make visibility difficult, which significantly damages the experience. The rainy season runs from July to September, with the first two months being the heaviest.

It must also be noted that Sipadan Island is incredibly popular, and thus arriving during peak traffic times may not be the best choice for those intent on spending the entirety of their holiday diving. Divers here must have permits, and only 120 permits are issued per day in total. Permits are issued on a first come, first served basis. The best way to guarantee a dive is to purchase accommodations that are packaged with a dive permit.

Peninsular Malaysia, also known as West Malaysia, has more than 20 dive sites that complement its sandy white beaches. Divers can view shipwrecks, coral reefs, and sealife. The environment is ideal for beginning scuba divers because the currents tend to be more mild in Peninsular Malaysia than those is Malaysian Borneo. A downside to choosing a scuba holiday in Peninsular Malaysia is that diving is not a year-round activity. The dry season runs from February to November, with April through October being peak times for diving. This is the best time to plan a dive holiday because it is the safest and has the best ocean visibility. Those wishing to dive in Malaysia during the winter holidays should skip Peninsular Malaysia and head to Malaysian Borneo instead.

No matter what time of year a traveller is able to get away, there is a spot in Malaysia that can accommodate divers. Malaysia has a multitude of amazing dive sites that are well worth the flight. Whether the holiday takes place in Malaysian Borneo in the east or Peninsular Borneo in the west, awe-inspiring dives are virtually a guarantee.
