Whether you are building from scratch or you are restoring a building, you ultimately want to consider building designed to ensure it has the look and feel that you are after. You already have preconceived notions about what you're building should and should not have – and this is why it is imperative to work with an architect that will spend the time going over the designs with you. Take some time to think about what you want. Do you want a grand entrance? Do you want a significant amount of space within each of the rooms? Do you need to provide convenient ways to get to the second floor? All of these need to be considered so that you can incorporate them within your designs. Look through architectural books and magazines to find out what designs are currently out there. When you want a building design, you need to have some ideas to show an architect. Make notes on the pages so that you can show the architect photos of what you do like so that they can be encompassed within your own designs. Once you have found an architect, talk about the building design. Listen to what their recommendations are and then express some of your desires. Allow them to create a design for you and then review it with the architect. This is your opportunity to go over any changes that you would like. You cannot hand at the designs to a construction company until you are satisfied with the overall building design. You will want to modify any of the designs prior to construction to avoid costly changes. If you decide midway through a construction project that you want the entrance to look differently or that you want the floor plan changed dramatically, it could cost you a significant amount of money because of having to purchase new supplies and modify structures that are already in place. Ultimately, you are in control of the design. It doesn't matter whether you are building from the ground up or modifying a structure that is already on the property. What matters is that you are happy with the design – and this includes flow, perception, and overall style. Ask to see photos of what an architect has produced in the past. If you are not happy with the photos that you see, it is unlikely that you will be happy with the designs that are produced for you. This is one of the easiest ways to find an architect to work with. Look at some of the buildings in your area and find out who has design them. If you want to be happy with the designs, you need to be happy with the architect. This may require some time on your part to talk to several different firms and discuss your ideas in detail. The building design is what you make of it. Explore your options and don’t accept anything unless you are truly impressed by the work.
