VANCOUVER Police have turned over the investigation toauthorities in Montreal after a human foot and hand were deliveredto two city schools. The grisly packages prompted Vancouver police to talk to Montrealinvestigators Tuesday to determine if there are any links tosuspected killer Luka Rocco Magnotta , who is believed to have murdered a man, then mailed body parts topolitical parties in Ottawa just over a week ago. According to Vancouver police Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke, the firstpackage contained a human hand and was delivered to False CreekElementary at around 1 p.m. The package was opened by office staff. Another package containing a human foot was also discovered bystaff at St. George s School about an hour later. This must have been a very, very traumatic incident for allinvolved at the schools in opening these packages, Lemcke said, adding victim services would work with staff and students followingTuesday s discoveries. Homicide investigators "noted that the packaging and addresseson the boxes sent to Vancouver was similar to that of the packagesdiscovered earlier this week in eastern Canada," said a VPDspokesperson in a release early Wednesday. That prompted Vancouverpolice to turn over the investigation to Montreal's homicide unit. While the B.C. Coroners Service concluded late Tuesday that theparts were in fact human remains, Lemcke said police were stillawaiting further tests to determine an identity and whether thehand and foot originated from the same victim. Investigators arealso not releasing information on whether the hand and foot foundTuesday are left or right. Cynthia Green, whose son attends False Creek Elementary, wasshocked to hear of the human remains. I m horrified, she said, noting the popular school has strongcommunity involvement. I think there s some very unhappy, sick people that need help. James Gemmill also has a child at False Creek and was waiting tohear more before deciding whether he should be concerned aboutkeeping his child in school. Who knows? We need more information whether it s connected toMontreal [the Magnotta case] or even a copycat, which would be evenmore troubling, he said. Police didn t have any early indications as to why the two schoolswere chosen for the deliveries. While the deliveries in Ottawatargeted the headquarters of political parties, it s unclearwhether either school has links to any local politicians or toMagnotta. There s no indication that any students or staff have beentargeted at these schools, Lemcke said. St. George s principal Greg Devenish said there was no record of aperson named Magnotta who had ever attended the private school. All I know is there was a suspicious parcel, they opened it,there s some human remains, Devenish told The Province. Otherthan that, I can t connect that person. That person [Magnotta] hasnever attended here. Never. Devenish said he couldn t recall whether an Eric Clinton Newman, another name also used by Magnotta, had attended the school. I ve been here 13 years. I don t know that name, he said. Investigators in Vancouver and Montreal have been in contact to seeif there is any link between the body parts mailed Tuesdayafternoon and the disturbing Magnotta case unfolding over the pastweek. Last Tuesday, a human foot was delivered to the Conservative partyheadquarters in Ottawa, while a package containing a hand destinedfor the Liberal party was intercepted. The same day, a human torsowas discovered stuffed in a suitcase and disposed behind anapartment in Montreal. The torso was identified as belonging to Chinese student Jun Lin,33. According to police, a hand, foot and head are the only partsstill missing. Magnotta, 29, the prime suspect in Lin s death, was arrestedMonday in Berlin after leading police on an international chase. You got me, he said when police found him in an Internet caf reading media stories about the murder he is suspected ofcommitting. twitter.com/cassidyolivier twitter.com/stephanie_ip.
