How to Create an Autorun on a USB Flash Drive A USB flash drive provides a convenient and safe way to carry around a PC's operating system. Run a PC automatically from a USB flash drive that has the Windows operating system installed onto it. The procedure does not require any special software. Neither the USB flash drive or the PC's Windows operating system will be damaged by creating an "autorun" Windows operating system on the drive. Instructions 1 Download a PC boot program to the PC's desktop, for example, the RMPrepUSB program (see Resources). Double-click on the file once downloaded. Follow the menu commands to install the program onto the PC's hard drive. Restart the PC. 2 Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on the PC. Eject the disc tray of the DVD drive. Place the Windows installation disc onto the disc tray. Close the disc tray. Launch the PC boot program by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" pop-up menu. Select "Max" from the "Size" column's drop down menu in the program's screen. 4 Name the USB flash drive in the "Volume label" text field (or leave it blank). Click the "Windows" button beneath the "Boot Options" tab. Click the "Fat32" button beneath the "File System" tab. 5 Click the "Source" button at the bottom of the window. Select the DVD drive from the list of choices in the window that pops up on the screen. Press the "OK" button to close the window. Click the "Output" button at the bottom of the window. Select the icon of the USB flash drive from the list of choices in the window that pops up on the screen. Press the "OK" button to close the window. 6 Press the "Go" or "Start" button on the program's screen. Press the "OK" button on the confirmation window that appears. 7 Wait as a copy window appears and fills in from left to right. Quit the PC boot program once the copy window has completely filled in and disappeared. 8 Right-click on the icon of the USB flash drive that is on the desktop. Select "Eject" from the pop-up window. Remove the USB flash drive from the USB port of the PC. Eject the disc tray. Remove the Windows installation disc.
