The Phoenix area is seeing one of its hottest winters on record, and the unseasonably balmy weather is giving scorpions an unusually "warm welcome.” Scorpions will always call the desert home, but that doesn’t mean you have to invite them into yours. Scorpions often hide in and around Arizona lawns, garages, attics and pool areas. They also like to creep under welcome mats, inside boxes and shoes and in any cluttered areas. Carefully check these places in your home and yard to see if you have an existing scorpion infestation. Thanks to scorpions’ natural camouflage, it can be hard to spot them during the daytime, so consider investing in a black light for an after-dark scorpion hunt. (Don’t forget to wear shoes, and never stick your hand anywhere you can’t see!) UV light converts proteins in scorpions’ exoskeletons into a glowing fluorescent light, making them highly visible to the human eye. If you do discover scorpions in or around your home, don’t panic! You can get rid of them easily with some easy DIY techniques. Glue boards are simple and effective extermination tools. Scorpions like to walk along walls, so place the boards in closet corners and other dark nooks and crannies. Boric acid is a powerful natural insecticide that works by adhering to the scorpion’s legs. Buy the powder form and sprinkle it into the cracks, crevices, and corners of your home. Even if you don’t have a scorpion problem, it’s smart to exercise preventative measures, so these creepy crawlies don’t come calling. Keep your lawn trimmed, put your firewood outside and away from the house, store food and garbage in sealed containers and clear your home and yard of clutter. You can also apply insecticide sprays and granules around the perimeter of your house to deter scorpion activity. (See our online demonstration videos on how to apply granules and how to get rid of scorpions altogether.)
