Reality shows – What does that mean? Reality shows are a programming that documents unscripted situations and actual occurrences, and often features a previously unknown cast. Documentaries, television news, sports television, talk shows are not categorized as reality shows even if they constitute elements of reality television such as unscripted situations and sometimes unknown participants. History of Reality shows - These types of programmes began in the early to mid-1990s with a programme named “Real World”. It then began as a phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global success of the series ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’. Reality shows, as a whole, has become a fixture of television programming. In the United States, various channels have retooled themselves to focus on reality TV, most famously MTV, which began in the 1980s as a music video pioneer, before switching to a nearly all-reality format in the early 2000s. The centre of the criticism was the use of the word ‘reality’ and such shows present the straightforward recounting of events that have occurred. According to critics, reality shows don’t actually present the real situations, instead the participants, plots and situations are pre-concepted and presented to make the shows more appealing. Other criticisms of reality shows are they intend to humiliate or exploit participants, they tailor celebrities out of untalented people who do not deserve fame and they also glamorize vulgarity and materialism. But, reality shows have ruled out all these criticisms and they are a huge hype among the audience. Numbers of reality shows are now aired on television. It has en-captured the audience to the core and they have a good TRP rating. These shows have proved themselves that they bring out real talents from the common people. Even, celebrities can’t deny the concept, because, they also get an opportunity to brush up their talents and bring them in front of the public.
