We all know it is never a good idea to drink alcoholic beverages while you are pregnant, as you and your baby share a bloodstream through the umbilical cord. Whatever you put in your body will go right to your baby, and there have been many studies that show that alcohol is very detrimental to a developing baby in so many ways. We know not to drink alcohol while we are pregnant, but should we start drinking alcohol again after we have given birth, and are breastfeeding? There is a big movement to stop women from drinking alcohol when they are pregnant, as it can cause all sorts of developmental defects in the baby growing in their womb. Alcohol has bad effects on people when they drink too much, as well. You will likely not drink when you are pregnant, but you may consider it when you have given birth. But, when you are breastfeeding, you must remember that what you eat or drink will be present in your breast milk as well. Just as you want to maintain healthy nutrition when you breastfeed, you should also avoid alcohol while you are doing so, as it will transfer to your breast milk, and alcohol is still not good for babies. You want the very best for your baby, and limiting bad things will come naturally. You can hold off having that cocktail for a few months while you are nurturing a healthy baby, giving them nutrients and antibodies that are essentially found in your breast milk. Why would you want to add anything that could potentially harm your child to your milk? You should maintain a good, highly nutritious diet while you are breastfeeding, knowing that the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals you consume will be passed to your baby. So will anything bad you ingest. The time will come when you have weaned your child, and you can begin to enjoy a cocktail again, or some wine with dinner. Your best bet is to avoid alcohol all the time you are breastfeeding, to be preventative of anything that may not be good for your child. There will come a time when you are feeding your child with formula or soft foods, and you can be assured that he or she is getting the nutrition they need from that food. Then you can indulge in the alcoholic beverages that you want, and know that your child is safe from the effects.
